Mentor - friend or foe?

Having a mentor can seem quite daunting and in fact many people feel that it implies they are not in control and that can make them skeptical when considering it as a option.  From my experience having a mentor is possibly one of the best things you can give to yourself and your business. A good mentor will provide guidance, advice, feedback and feedback.  Beyond that, as you grow the relationship, they will become one of your strongest advocates.  I've had one for over 10 years, not only are they now one of my strongest advocates, they are a true friend and always provide me with honest frank feedback which has proved to be invaluable.

The biggest advice I would give to anyone looking for a mentor is that you need to click at the outset, so having a simple coffee and a overall chat will help both parties decide if it will work. As a business owner be prepared to be completely open with them, otherwise you will struggle to reep the rewards that having a mentor can offer.

From a mentor’s perspective, working in this collaborative style can be one of the most rewarding things you will do in your career, and for me personally at Optima Strive there is nothing like seeing something grow and develop, knowing you have been a part of that journey.

So beyond the obvious personal growth is another significant benefit of having a mentor. Their encouragement and constructive feedback can boost your confidence, helping you believe in your abilities. Mentors also help keep you focused and accountable, ensuring you stay on track with your goals and progress, it’s so easy to get distracted when you have so much going on.

From a practical view a mentor’s network can open doors to new opportunities and relationships, expanding your horizons in ways you might not have considered. They can help you think strategically and plan for the long-term, ensuring your business grows in a sustainable and thoughtful manner.

Building a strong network of your own allows you to find like-minded individuals and organisations to partner with, fostering collaboration and growth. Your network can provide access to funding, talent, and other resources that are vital for your business's success. Staying connected with peers and industry leaders keeps you informed about the latest trends and market shifts. Sharing challenges and solutions within your network can lead to innovative ideas and strategies.

Having a network of fellow entrepreneurs and professionals offers a source of encouragement and moral support during tough times. You can receive diverse perspectives and feedback, enriching your understanding and approach to business decisions. Being active within your professional network increases your visibility and helps establish your reputation in the industry. Relationships with respected individuals and organizations enhance your credibility and can open doors to new opportunities.

Both mentors and a strong network contribute to your ongoing personal and professional development. Access to varied viewpoints enriches your decision-making process, helping you see situations from multiple angles.

Mentors can guide your career trajectory, while a network can provide direct opportunities for advancement and growth. Leveraging the knowledge and connections of both mentors and networks can significantly benefit your business and personal development.

In challenging times, both mentors and a robust network act as a safety net, offering advice, support, and encouragement. They help you stay adaptable and responsive to changes in the business environment, ensuring you are always ready to pivot when needed. Having a mentor and a strong network not only supports your immediate business needs but also fosters long-term growth, resilience, and success. These relationships enrich your journey, making the path to your goals a more supportive and collaborative experience.

So if you think this is something for you, don’t procrastinate, it simple could be the best simple step you make.
